Christmas has come and past and with it, the new year. January has brought wind, snow and ice, but also dazzling sunlit afternoons that make the snow shimmer with golden hues. I love winter. But sometimes I do think back on that time of year when there are more colours, not just brown and greys and blues (as beautiful as they are).
October is a painting (acrylic) of a picture I took this fall, when the scent of summer had not quite left yet but winter was not yet here to stay. It was a time of transition, as much literally as metaphorically. This is the entrance to the botanical gardens at my university. I like this place because it is like a doorway to a different world. Once you have passed underneath the archway, you step into the gardens and it’s as if you leave the campus behind, with its buildings and books and laptops. For a moment you trade one world for another.
